Weavers like Nizzamuddin are revered for their artistry. But due to geographic isolation, changing technology, and threats from cheaper imported materials, their livelihoods are in danger.
The weavers of Varanasi face poverty, debt and isolation. Unable to invest in the materials they need to produce their traditional sarees, and facing competition from cheap, man made imports, selling their beautiful products is a huge challenge. Young people are abandoning the traiditional craft, forced to look for labouring work in nearby cities.
That’s why Traidcraft Exchange’s work in this region is so vital. We are helping weavers to come together, so they can negociate fair loans to invest in their business, learn how to market their products using new technology, and keep their traditions alive.
But we need your help. With your support, we can reach more and more weaver families, so that the people of Varanasi can safeguard their ancient craft and know that their children can look forward to a bright and hopeful future.
Please, give what you can today. Together, we can ensure not only that the weavers of Varanarsi can leave poverty behind, but that their families can remain together and preserve their traditional crafts for the next generation.
Thank you so much for your kind support this Christmas.
